Effects of Intravenous Liquid Halothane on Vital Organs in Rat

Abstract
Halothane is a fluorinated hydrocarbon in common use as an inhalation anesthetic. Repeated exposure to halothane by inhalation may cause the rare complication of hepatic necrosis. Accidental intravenous administration of halothane is known to have occurred in several instances and has been suspected in others. Fatal pulmonary edema occurred a few hours after the suspected injection of a few mililiters of halothane but liver function tests showed no gross abnormality during his illness.
Since such accidents can occur, and as early recognition might be important in their treatments, we decided to investigate the toxic effects of the intravenous injection of halothane on the rat.
The results were as follows:
1) The lungs were found to have severe pulmonary hemorrhage and edema.
2) The livers were unremarkable.
